Mayor Frank G. Pelzman will welcome NASA astronaut Fernando “Frank” Caldeiro to Woodbridge Monday, April 11, at 1:30 p.m. as students at Matthew Jago Elementary School get a vicarious opportunity to “reach for the stars”.
The appearance is sponsored by Rep. Bob Menendez (NJ-13), Chairman of the Democratic Caucus. Rep . Menendez sponsors the annual astronaut appearances as part of an ongoing effort to increase students’ interest in math and science.
Astronaut Caldeiro, a civilian mission specialist with NASA since 1996, will talk to the students about astronaut training, educational opportunities at NASA and working at NASA. He will conclude his visit with a question/answer session.
“We are very pleased that students will get to meet a distinguished scientist and modern American explorer,” says Mayor Pelzman. “Fernando Caldeiro is an outstanding role model, and we thank Rep. Mendendez for organizing this event for our students.”
Mr. Caldeiro is the lead astronaut in charge of Shuttle software testing at the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he attended high school in New York and received his Master of Science degree in engineering management from the University of Central Florida.
Mr. Caldeiro was certified for NASA flight assignment in 1998. He has worked for NASA as a cryogenics and propulsion systems expert for the Safety and Mission Assurance Office. Initially assigned to the Astronaut Office Station Operations Branch, he served as lead astronaut for European-built station modules. He was the Rockwell International Design Center representative for the ground processing and launch of the Orbiter Discovery.
