| Voter Registration Rally Mobilizes Student Political Fervor |
WHERE: Berkeley College Middlesex Campus, 430 Rahway Ave., Woodbridge
WHO: Speakers include Mayor Frank G. Pelzman, Sen. Joseph Vitale
Political apathy rampant among college students? Not if Berkeley College can help it.
The school’s Middlesex Campus is holding a Voter Registration Rally Thursday, September 9 at 11 a.m. designed to respond to the student body’s growing interest in the 2004 Presidential Election and to impress upon students the importance of direct participation in the electoral process.
The Rally, which will feature an address by Woodbridge Mayor Frank G. Pelzman and remarks from representatives of the Democratic and Republican parties, will be held at 430 Rahway Avenue in Woodbridge. At the rally, students and all other interested people will have the opportunity to register to vote in the November 2004 elections.
“The right to vote in free elections is perhaps the most precious and important right an American possesses,” Mayor Pelzman said. “It means each voter has the ability to shape the society we live in, and that is both an awesome power and a serious responsibility.”
Diane Recinos, Director of Berkeley’s Middlesex Campus , notes that for many students 2004 will be the first opportunity to exercise their right to vote. “Watching the excitement of the conventions and the media coverage of the Presidential Election,” she said, “many of our students are becoming aware of their important responsibility in helping to choose a presidential candidate.”
In addition to the opening remarks by Mayor Pelzman, the rally will feature a description of the broad themes of the Democratic and Republican parties and the positions of the two presidential candidates. State Senator Joseph Vitale (D-Woodbridge) will speak on behalf of the Democrats; the Republican representative will be announced on Wednesday. The event will also feature a remembrance of those who perished on September 11.|
