Woodbridge Township will receive $1.9 million from the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders to improve its parks and outdoor recreational facilities, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.

The funds come from the county’s Open Space, Recreation and Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund. Woodbridge plans to upgrade the playing fields adjacent to Woodbridge High School and will include baseball, soccer and softball fields and new walkways and restrooms.

“We have an expanding population in Woodbridge and the surrounding area, especially in the under-18 segment,” said Mayor Pelzman. “This money will help us keep up with the recreational needs of our population in the years to come.”

Council President Rick Dalina said the grant is an excellent use of county funds. “Woodbridge Township has a large and thriving youth sports program that will benefit from this investment in improved facilities.”

Money from the Open Space, Recreation and Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund has been used to support a wide range of projects, ranging from restoration of the State Theatre in New Brunswick to acquiring farmland for open space preservation. “This gives us the flexibility to put county tax dollars directly back into the community,” said Middlesex County Freeholder Deputy Director Stephen “Pete” Dalina.
